SPICY BUTTERMILK COFFEE CAKE 2 1/2 c all-purpose flour 1/2 tsp cinnamon 2 c packed brown sugar 1/2 tsp nutmeg 1/2 tsp salt 1 c buttermilk or sour milk 2/3 c shortening 2 beaten eggs 2 tsp baking powder 1/3 c chopped nuts 1/2 tsp baking soda Combine flour, brown sugar, and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture is crumbly. Set aside 1/2 c of crumb mixture. To remainder, add baking powder, baking soda, and spices. Mix well. Add buttermilk or sour milk and eggs. Mix well. Pour into two round cake pans. Combine reserved crumbs with nuts and sprinkle over batter. Bake at 375 for 20 to 25 minutes. Serve warm.
